The New England National Party is a moderate conservative party, and is the largest political party in New England.
The National Party can trace its roots back to the old Australian Country Party
, which was formally founded in 1922. The Nationals have governed New England for 23 years, longer than any other party, although it has been often with the support of the further right Democratic Conservatives.
The National Party split off from it's Australian parent at the height of the Civil War owing to what was perceived by local members as an insipid response by the party to sympathise with the needs to the New England people. From that point on, the party has supported a free and independent New England.
It opposed the radicalism of the United Party in the early days of New England's independence, offering a moderate road to the electorate. The party merged with the rump of the Australian Liberal Party
membership in 2018 and remains the dominant centre-right party in New England.
Today, the Nationals control seven of the twelve county governments.
Policy
National Party policy continues to reflect the moderate conservative model of politics that developed in New England after the Civil War. The National's see themselves as a 'big tent', with many competing ideas and goals. Despite this, the party is renowned for it's party discipline and single-focused agenda that is meted out the party's annual conference.
The party continues to focus on agrarian socialism as the central tenant of economic management, and so it is the natural choice for many people who work in the agricultural sector. This idea has also been extended to the environmental sector in the last few years.
The party believes in minimum economic intervention, but reserves the right to do so when it believes necessary. It is essentially a party in the model of the Canadian Red Tories
of the 1970's and 1980's, with a conservative economic agenda and moderately progressive social agenda. On most social issues, the party allows a conscience vote, but in a nation that is essentially socially progressive, it is seldom exercised.
The National Party is strongly in favour of preserving the independence of New England and maintaining the institutions of government as they were established in the constitution. Past experience has shown that the party is not afraid to take aggressive action against any nation that would seek to compromise New England's independence.
The party is also a staunch member of the Monarchist League in the Witan, and opposes a republic.
