The Progressive Party of New England or The Progressives are a minor centre-left political party that does not currently hold seats in the Parliament. It has formerly been the junior partner in several governing coalitions, being somewhat to the left of the major parties. The current leader is Claudia Fitzmorris.
The party has been in parliament once, from 2040 to 2044, when it formed a coalition with the Social Democratic Labour Party.
Policy
The Progressive Party has a particular focus on the creation of jobs and working towards to the elimination of unemployment. The party also makes special note of the need for free education, healthcare and the public ownership of utilities major objectives.
Economically, the party places particular attention on economic development in the 'fringe counties' of Clarence and Gwydir (rather than in Armidale, Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour). The party is also strongly republican and usually is the largest opponent to the election of a Monarch at the Witan. The party additionally maintains a strongly protectionist policy which is against any political or economic union with other countries or regional unions.
