The New England Greens or simply The Greens are an environmental party that was first founded in 2012. The party pursues a radical green agenda, with particular emphasis on Deep Ecology
.
The original party, known as the Green Party, was established in 2012. It enjoyed success at the 2020 and 2024 General Elections, picking up a seat on both occasions. In 2020, the party's leader John Johnstone, led the Greens into coalition with the other left leaning parties and was made Minister of Conservation. The party remained in coalition with the Social Democratic Labour Party after the 2024 election, but it left the coalition when the Gates government fell in 2026. In 2028 a split occurred in the party when the moderate members of the party agreed to merge with social liberals to form the New England Alliance. The more radical members of the old party refused to join, and formed a rump party in early 2029.
The new party known as the New England Greens, was led by a group of prominent New England ecologists and radicals in response to the perceived need for the reformation of New England's society. The new party was much further to the left of it's predecessor, and attracted a smaller base of support.
The party has since contested every election since 2036, but so far failed to win a seat. The best result for the post-merger party was in 2044, when they won 3.7% of the party vote. Today, the party has a single Thegn on Raleighshire county council.
Policy
The party supports the central tenants of deep ecology, including decentralisation, the creation of eco-regions, the breakdown of industrialism in its current form, and an end to authoritarianism. The party believe that the world does not exist as a resource to be freely exploited by humans, and seeks to brake any form of development that would damage or exploit the resources of the country.
The party is very loosely communist in the true sense of the world. It seeks to breakdown the large cities and replace them with smaller self sufficient communes. The party has advocated an end to nation states, with the commune as the highest form of government. The party is avowedly republican, and is a member of the Republican Coalition in the Witan.
In practical terms, the party is not widely popular, owing to it's radical policies and perceived misanthropic beliefs.
