The Free Democrats are a small libertarian party in New England's political environment between 2032 and 2044. It strongly supported the maximization of individual rights, private property rights, and free market capitalism whilst maintaining a strong socially progressive belief as well. The party was formed as a faction within the Democratic Conservative Party as a group of neoliberals who also advocated the government has no place in the private lives on the individual. After much debate, the faction split in 2032 and the new party was formed the following year.
The party is very small, and has seldom enjoyed representation at either the county or national level. To date, the parties best result was at the 2048 General Election, where the party gained enough votes to have seats in parliament. These MP's subsequently lost their seats at the 2052 election.
Policy
The key tenets of the Democratic Alliance revolve around a mostly unregulated free market economy, including support of the right to keep and bear arms, opposition to drug prohibition and elimination of the state-supported social welfare system.
The party also supports strong civil liberties including free speech, freedom of association, sexual freedom, and a foreign policy of free trade, non-intervention, abortion, and opposition to the use of the NEDF to attain goals, except the most extreme of circumstances. The party is also strongly republican, and is a member of the Republican Coalition in the Witan.
Uniquely, the party considers the cold war between Europe and the United States to be damaging to well being of New England and society in general. The DA seeks to break down the barriers between the two superpowers and tackle what it calls 'social authoritarianism' in all nations.
