The United Party of New England was the first governing party in New England, and the leading force behind the independence of New England from Australia.
The party was established as the United Militia of New England in late 2005, and led the first two governments of New England until it merged with the Social Democratic Party and the Labour Party to form the Social Democratic Labour Party in 2025.
Policy
United's official aim was turn New England into a self sufficient nation that was not reliant on Australia or any other nation for the basic requirements of running an independent nation. In almost every policy sphere, the party aimed to remove connexions with Australia.
The result was the creation of an independent financial, electric, water, road and railway network system. The major failing of the first United government was in the area of foreign affairs, where the constant threat of an American backed invasion loomed. This was an area where United could not come up with a workable solution.
After the fall of the first United government in 2015, the party changed direction and became more open to working with Australia. The party tried to work within the framework of the Australasian Council, but after the rebuff of the first few years, the Australians became less inclined to assist New England and after 2021 began to actively undermine the New Englanders.
In the 2024 election, United had won just eight seats and was one of the junior members of the left leaning coalition of parties that included the Social Democrats and Labour. In the policy realm, the three parties were almost the same, and so the merger in 2025 came a little surprise to many analysts.
