The twelfth General Election for the House of Assembly was held on Saturday, 2 March 2052. The governing National Party went into the election hoping to secure a record third consecutive term in power.
The election resulted in a win for Matthew Jones, leader of Social Democratic Labour Party with 40 of 103 seats, ahead of the National Party led Jim Gordon with 35 seats. Jones was able to strike an agreement on supply and confidence with the New England Alliance after the election, thereby guaranteeing the security of his government.
Background
In 2048, the National Party narrowly won the general election, and was able to form an administration with the support of two independents. A confidence and supply agreement was rejected by the New England Alliance, who with the SDLP, had the numbers to bring the government down. Despite this, no attempt was made, and the government made enough consessions to ensure it's survival.
Under the provisions set out in the Elections Act 2018, an election must be held on the first Saturday in March, which must be between thirty and forty days after the King has dropped the writ and dissolved the House of Assembly.
