Witan of 2036

Witan of 2036
Order: Third
Sitting Dates: 29 - 31 January 2036
Chancellor: Jacob Meyer
Members: 181
Purpose: Election of Monarch

The Witan of 2036 met between the 29 - 31 January, after the death of King Michael the previous day. The Witan was, for the first time, charged with the responsibility of electing a new Monarch. The sitting was called to Armidale by the tolling of the National Bell Tower after the announcement of the King's death at 1330 NET on the 28 January.

Additionally, the Witan was given the task of granting the title of Crown Prince and Duchy of Duval, and finally on it's last sitting day, the Witan was also charged with the setting the new Privy Budget.

After the most vigorous debate the it's history, which lasted two days, the Witan chose HRH Prince James as the Monarch and his brother HH Prince Edgar as Crown Prince and Duke of Duval. Prince James was elected by Monarch by a relatively narrow margin of 116 votes for to 81 votes against, whilst Prince Edgar was more easily elected as Crown Prince 180 votes for to 17 votes against. The Witan could not get a unanimous result on either vote owing those members who advocated a republic joining with those opposed to James becoming King to vote against his election as the Monarch. Prince Edgar's election was opposed by the republican members only.

The setting of the Privy Budget was set on the 31 January. After several hours of debate, the Witan set the budget at C10 million. For the King and the other active members of the Royal House to carry out official business excluding travel costs.
