Select Committees

All legislation brought before the House of Assembly is scrutinised by Select Committees. The Committees can call for submissions from the public, thereby meaning that there is a degree of public consultation before a parliamentary bill proceeds into law. The lack of a permenant upper house in the parliament led to the creation of a strong committee system to ensure bills receivie the due examination and revision required for them to become law. Each Select Committee has a Chairman and a deputy who oversee the operation of commitee and enforce the standing orders of the House of Assembly.

Membership is divided between all the parties in the House, and Members may be members of more than one Select Committee. While most Select Committees have five, some of the more important have a membership of seven. Membership on a commitee is coverted by all members.

There are currently fourteen Select Committees in the House of Assembly, as follows:
