The Cross of Gallantry or CG is a medal of bravery and is the second highest award in New England. The award is highest honour that can be awarded for civilian or to military personnel for gallant conduct which is not in the face of the enemy.

The Cross of Gallantry was instituted by King Michael and has been awarded just sixteen times since it was created on the 3rd October 2012. Like all of New England's medals and honours, the sale of any vestments and accoutrements relating to the Cross of Gallantry is barred by law.

Description

The Cross of Gallantry is a straight arm silver cross, with a badge featuring the New England Lion, surrounded by the word "Gallantry and Courage". It is ensigned with the Crown of New England. Recipients are entitled to the postnominal letters CG. Bars are awarded to the Gallantry Cross in recognition of the performance of further acts of bravery meriting the award, although none have yet been awarded.

Creation

The award was created by King Michael on the 3rd October 2012, along with the Cross of Valour and the Order of New England. The King declared that the award would be open to both military personnel and civilians and could be awarded posthumously.

The medal is a direct successor to the Commonwealth George Cross (of which it is a great likeness) and the Australian Cross of Valour which was abolished in New England by the creation of this new award. In announcing the new award, the King said: "It is my intention that those people who risk their lives for the well being of others, in circumstances of great peril, should be so rewarded with a medal that forever recognises their gallantry and courage above themselves".

Recipients

Since the medal was created, it has been awarded just sixteen times and the history of the award can be divided onto four neat periods. Upon it's creation, the medal was immediately awarded to four United Militia personnel from actions during the Civil War, of which one was awarded posthumously. It was awarded a further four times to civilians between 2015 and 2032 when the Five Day War broke out.

The war led to four medals being awarded for actions carried by the New England Defence Force, two of which were posthumously awarded. Since the war, three civilians and one solider have been awarded to medal, with most recent being Private Michael McHugh of the 4th Battalion Royal New England Regiment (4RNER) for actions while on peacekeeping duties in Kashmir.
