Coronation
Unlike many other monarchies around the world, New England continues to observe a coronation of its monarchs after they acceede to the throne. The investment of a monarch with regal power through, with the symbolic act of placing the a crown upon his or her head, is of particular importance to many New Englanders. Much of the ceremony is performed by the Royal Chancellor of State, the most senior member of the Executive Council besides the Monarch. Many other government officials and guests attend, including foreign heads of state.
The coronation usually takes place several months after the death of the previous monarch, for the coronation is considered a joyous occasion that would be inappropriate when mourning still continues. (It also gives planners enough time to complete the elaborate arrangements required.) For example, James II was crowned on 23 November 2046, despite having acceded to the throne on 9 December 2045, the day after his brother's death.
