The Ministry of Primary Industry or MoPI is the Executive Ministry of New England responsible for the utilisation of natural resources and the management of primary industries. The ministry regulates all of New England's mines and forest plantations. It is also charged with the regulation of farming, grazing and harvesting by New England's farmers.

A small portfolio, the ministry has about 3,400 staff and is based in the suburb of Soudan Heights in Armidale. The current Minister of State for Primary Industry is David Levine.

Responsibilities

In particular, the ministry has been responsible for banning those practices which have a poor impact on the land.

Departments

CattleThe ministry has four major departments under it's care:

Department of Agriculture - Responsible for a variety of rural industries, the department's main functions are to facilitate research, education, advice, and regulation of the agricultural sector of New England. Through it's subordinate divisions, the department operates the National Agicultural Research Centres in Grafton and Uralla.

Department of Fisheries - Matters relating to fisheries and aquaculture are handled by the department of fisheries. The department is charged with regulating the catching and marketing of fish, other seafood and fish products (including freshwater fisheries). The department also issues licences for all professional and recreational fishing and manages the issuing of leases for oyster beds in all esturies along the coast.

Department of Forests - The department has been tasked with the administration of New England's forests and timber reserves, the training of forest officers, the conduct of research work and for the collection of statistics in connection with forestry. Management of National Forests also rests with the department.
