Trunk Roads
Trunk roads are major roads in the New England National Roadways Plan (NRP), and are second only to motorways in their importance. As of 2052, there are nine trunk roads, which are numbering A1 to A9 in accordance with the NRP. The trunk road network is currently 1,386 kilometres in length.
Unlike main and secondary roads, trunk roads are fully funded and maintained by the Department of Main Roads.
Appearance & Standard
Trunk roads are defined by a strict standard that separates them from main roads, although in some ways, they are very similar. For appropriate classification, a trunk road must conform to the following:
- fully sealed surface;
- hard shoulder at least 1m in width;
- single carriageway with alternating overtaking lanes (sometimes also known as a 2+1 road);
- median fencing (without a central reservation);
- grade separated junctions for motorways and other trunk roads
- seagull intersections for all at-grade intersections
Trunk roads are signed using green coloured direction signs. Route numbers are given in gold, with all other writing in white:
