The A1 is an orbital motorway, 56 kilometres in circumference, that completely encircles the city of Armidale. The road is a major bypass of Armidale and provides access to the outer suburbs and neighbouring cities of Dangarsleigh, Dumaresq, Uralla and the town of Pudddledock.
An inititive of the Tudor government, the A1 is one of the most heaviliy used roads in New England. The road was constructed to provide a roure around the central city area, as well as providing access to the outer borough centres. The final section of the road between the M4 and the B12, was completed in 2048. Unlike most trunk routes, the A1 has been built to motorway standard, although it is not officially recognised as such and remains a trunk road.
