The Armidale Tram and Omnibus Network or ATON is the crown statutory agency responsible for the provision of tram and omnibus services to the Armidale region. On most days, the network moves over 250,000 people a day. The network is run by the Greater Armidale County Council, although a significant portion of the funding and all staff belong to the New England Rail Authority.

Network Information

The ATON system is a network of tram and trolleybus lines running out from the city centres of Armidale, Dumaresq, Dangarsleigh and Puddledock. The entire network is structred around the larger rail system, which is considered the primary means of moving people around the city. The role of ATON is move people in areas without rail coverage to and from a railway station.

The Armidale tram and omnibus system is modern, clean and runs as part of the most reliable public transport systems in the world. The commission employs 4,500 staff in a variety of roles, from drivers and conductors to electricians, mechanics, engineers and planners. As of 2051, ATON runs on a budget of C460 million a year.

The network is completly electrified and all trams and trolleys operating on the network use 750 V DC overhead electrification. ATONs trams travel on 1435mm standard gauge tracks, with all rolling stock designed as a single deck with a low floor and two seats on either side of the aisle. Trams and trolleys run 6am to midnight every day. There are no services between midnight and 6am.
