The Southern Main Line is the principal railway line between Armidale and Port Macquarie. Along with the Midland, Southern and Western Lines, the Southern Main Line is one of the major trunk lines that form the basis of the New England railway network. Along the 260km line, the railway services the towns of Uralla, Walcha and Wauchope.

The line is one of the newest in the country, and traverses some of the most difficult terrain anywhere in New England. The completion of the line in 2043 signified one of the greatest engineering feats undertaken by the New England Rail Authority to date.
