The City of Wauchope is the second largest city in Macquarie and the seventh largest overall in New England. As of 2050, the city had a population of just over 116,000 people. Nestled on the banks of the Hastings River, Wauchope is affectionately known as Timbertown or the Heart of the Hastings.
Founded as a centre for timber getters and farmers in 1836, Wauchope has grown into a major satellite city of the Greater Port Macquarie conurbation with major industries, including the headquarters of New England's biggest timber and dairy companies.
Area
The city covers a decent sized area on the meandering reaches of the Hastings River. The boundaries of the city are defined as the northern limit of Cairncross National Forest to the north, the M2 to the east, Herons Creek and Butchers Yard Road to the south and the Hastings River, Pappinbarra River and a line following Frazers Creek Road, Bellangry Road and Letterbox Road to the edge of Cairncross Forest to the west
Geography & Climate
The City of Wauchope is dominated by the presence of the Hastings River. The river plays a major role in the lives of many people, both for work as a source of fish and recreation as a place to enjoy swimming, boating . The bounds of the city are roughly the same as the river valley, and so the city is very much centred on the meandering bends of the Hastings as it winds it's way to the sea. Floods can be a risk, and considerable efforts have been made to alleviate the risk of inundation.
Being located in a river valley some distance from the coast, the average temperatures tend to be more extreme than those enjoyed by residents in Port Macquarie and Laurieton. The climate of the city is sub-tropical with average temperatures ranging from a minimum of -2.2 Degrees Celsius in Winter to a maximum of 43.3 Degrees Celsius in the Summer.
Culture
Wauchope has a well earned moniker of Timbertown. The city was built on the back of timber getters before the coming of farmers in the 1820s. Today, farming and timber has been replaced with service industries assisting the agricultural sector in the upper Hastings valley. A major draw card is the Timbertown Pioneer Village, a theme park that features many aspects of life for the timber getters in the 1820's and 30's.
The city's warm climate and large entertainment facilities make it a favourite spot for conferences, trade fairs and business retreats. As well, a variety of the usual cultural pursuits can be found throughout the city, with Wauchope being famous for it's many pubs.
