Originally a mining town, Uralla has long been home to New England's small manufacturing sector and also contains many of the market gardens supplying a variety of herbs and vegetables. Uralla is also the most ethically diverse of all of Greater Armidale, with significant populations of African and Asian New Englanders.

Uralla lies directly to the west of the cities of Armidale, Dangarsleigh and Dumaresq. Dangarsleigh covers only a small geographical area, and is located to the south east of Armidale.

In terms of the boundaries of the city, Uralla is bound into an area roughly outlined by the A1 Trunk Road to the north, Saumarez Creek to the east, Salisbury Waters to the south and the Yarrowyck Range to the west.

Uralla was founded as a mining town, and to this day maintains a strong working-class ethic. The biggest local event is the annual Thunderbolt Festival, which celebrates the pioneer heritage of the city, and commemorates the death of Frederick 'Thunderbolt' Ward, a local bushranger from the nineteenth century.
