Macintyre is a large county located in the north-west of New England. The county is considered to be New England's breadbasket, and home to major agricultural industries such as wheat, hemp and millet crops and gemstone mining.
The county town is the City of Inverell, located on the Macintyre River, after which the county was named.
Area & Population
In terms of area, Macintyre is the second largest county in New England. It stretches from the Dumaresq River in the north to Lake Copeton in the south, taking in a breathtaking variety of natural landscapes. Formally, the county is divided into the Districts of Bukkulla, Elsmore, Mt Russell and Yetman and, the Towns of Ashford, Delungra and Tingha and the City of Inverell
Macintyre's population makes it a medium sized county. There are 133,151 people who reside in the county, with just over 105,000 of these in the county town of Inverell.
Politics
Unlike a number of counties, control of Macintyre has been shared between the SDLP and the Nationals since independence. Today, the National Party controls the county.
